Tanzania is quite a large country with a total land area of some 945,000 sq. kms. Out of which nearly 25% was deliberately set aside to conservation, all this land mass is designated as fully fledged as either National parks; 15 of them; or game protected areas, one large conservation area and game reserves, one of which, The Selous game reserve is the worlds largest with a total area of 55,000 sq. kms. The country constitutes some 120 ethnic tribes and dialects and yet Tanzania is an amazingly peaceful country, with a friendly people who are always eager to share and assist.
The word KARIBU, the lingua franca SWAHILI for WELCOME and an amiable smile flows almost unconsciously from the lips of every Tanzanian on the first meeting with a total stranger/visitor. Tanzania is a country immensely endowed with an enormous abundance in quantity, quality and variety of natural heritage. By any standards, Tanzania is an exceptionally beautiful and interesting country. With 15 fully fledged national parks, 17 game reserves, 50 game controlled areas, one conservation area and a marine park, the country no doubt offers a unique range of visitor experience. The country’s wildlife resources are considered among the finest in the world and have been known for ages; they include the Serengeti plains, the spectacular Ngorongoro crater, Africa’s highest free standing mountain Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Selous game reserve. Other natural attractions include the long and sandy white beaches north and south of Dar es Salaam, to the exotic “spice islands of Zanzibar and the excellent deep sea fishing along Mafia and Pemba islands, also along the Indian ocean are the remains of ancient settlements.
In the hinterland, at Olduvai Gorge in the Great Rift Valley is the site of discoveries of the traces of the world’s earliest man “Zinjathropous Bosei”. To the tourist, Tanzania also has an interesting array of cultures, traditions, taboos and crafts, the most outstanding are the world renowned Maasai and Makonde sculptures carvings in Ebony. The country is also home of the famous precious BLUE gemstone called the TANZANITE, which apparently takes its name from its country of origin TANZANIA.
